Chapter 7

“Come on, Billy, we gotta go,” Sam said for the tenth time. “My mom might look for us at the campground.”

Billy didn’t want to go. Smoky had curled up in his arms and fallen asleep. He thought he could watch the puppy all day.

“Here, I’ll take Smoky,” Kody said, reaching for the dog. “Moses is stopping by later today to take a look at him.”

He let the puppy go with reluctance. “How long before you’ll let them go to other homes?”

Ella came outside as he spoke and she and Kody exchanged one of those, I don’t know how to answer that question adult looks. He got the same look from his mother when he asked how Deb-oo-rah had gotten a baby in her tummy.

“These are working dogs, Billy,” Ella said with a smile. “But we don’t take them from their mother until they’re six weeks old, so they have another week or so to go before we’ll do anything with them.”

“The little guy…” Kody started, but Ella smacked him in the arm, so he didn’t finish what he was about to say.

“Okay.” Billy slowly stood up, his gaze lingering on the pups. “Thanks for letting me pet Smoky.”

“You’re welcome,” Ella said, at the same time Sam muttered, “Uh-oh. We’re in trouble now.”

Billy swung around and winced when he saw the four adults walking towards them. His mother was out in front, wearing the I’m-not-happy-with-you-young-man face.

“Where have you been? We’ve been all over town looking for you.” Crystal said, planting her hands on her hips.

Billy knew there was no easy way out, so he stared at his feet. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “I just wanted to pet the puppies.”

“I’m afraid it’s our fault, Crystal, we didn’t know the kids hadn’t told you where they were going, and didn’t think to ask,” Ella said.

“Sam. Did you lie to us about where you and Billy were going?” Hope asked.

Billy felt bad for getting his friend in trouble. “It’s my fault, Mrs. Thompson. I told Sam to say we were goin’ there, then changed my mind.”

“Billy, what am I going to do with you?” His mom sounded sad and mad at the same time. He wanted to answer, “Get me a puppy,” but figured this might not be the right time to ask.

“All right, kids, let’s go.” Doc Eli stepped back, making room for them to head back across the yard to the driveway.

Billy winced when he noticed his mom and Sam’s mom speaking together in soft voices. He knew they were discussing what their punishment would be.

He thought that not having a puppy of his own was punishment enough.

Levi could have been invisible the way Crystal’s attention was focused solely on her son. Maybe he shouldn’t have been surprised. She’d made it clear she hadn’t wanted him to come along.

Yet during the walk over to the Sled Dog Safari, she’d held his hand as if unwilling to let go. He was glad she’d leaned on him, if only for a short time.
